Kings Road Primary School is committed to promoting excellent attendance. Children attain well when their attendance is good or better. Please see our school attendance policy.

School attendance is mandatory and the usual rules continue to apply, including;

  • a parent's duty to ensure that their child attends regularly at school, where the child is a registered pupil at school and they are of compulsory school age;
  • It is the school's responsibility to record attendance and follow up absence
  • school can request the local authority to issue sanctions, including fixed penalty notices in line with the local authority's Code of Conduct.

Attendance and Punctuality

At Kings Road, we believe that regular attendance at school is essential if children are to get the best possible start in life.  We strongly discourage leave of absence during school time.  All those with parental responsibility are accountable for the regular and punctual attendance of their children. If your child is absent for 10 school days, they will miss 5% of their education during the academic year.

The DFE is very clear that schools may not authorise holidays for children during term time. This includes for overseas weddings, to allow for unusual working patterns or to visit family. Holidays will not be permitted during term time.  We encourage all parents to make non urgent medical appointments, including dental appointments, after the school day.

Persistent Absence

attendance is 90% or below

When a pupil’s overall absence is 10% or more of their possible sessions (attendance is 90% or below), attendance is a serious concern.  This is a high risk group and the pupil is now identified as persistently absent (PA).

If a pupil has continued poor attendance, you are at risk of a penalty notice or a referral being made to Early Help (Trafford’s safeguarding team).

Persistent absence is a serious problem for pupils. Much of the work children miss when they are off school is never made up, leaving these pupils at a considerable disadvantage for the remainder of their school career. There is also clear evidence of a link between poor attendance at school and low levels of achievement:

Start of the day

The registers are taken twice a day at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions. Each school day counts as two attendances

Reception

Our school day begins promptly at 8.55am. All children should be ready to enter their classrooms at 8.50am.

KS1 (Year 1 & 2)

Our school day begins promptly at 8.50am. All children should be ready to enter their classrooms no later than 8.45am. The school gates will be locked by 9.05am. Once the school doors are closed, children will need to enter via the office where they will be given a late mark. Please ensure that your children are punctual in order to avoid this.

KS2 (Years 3 to 6)

Our school day begins promptly at 8.55am. All children should be ready to enter their classrooms no later than 8.50am. The school gates will be locked by 9.05am. Once the school doors are closed, children will need to enter via the office where they will be given a late mark. Please ensure that your children are punctual in order to avoid this.

Late Pickup

Parents and Carers should collect their children from their exit points on time at 3.10pm for KS1 and 3.15pm for KS2 when the school day finishes.  We have no provision for extra childcare after this time.  If your child is collected late on a regular basis, they will be looked after by a member of staff. However, this will be charged at a rate of £5 for every 20 minutes after finishing time.

If you are over 1 hour late to collect your child and have made no contact with school, we will make a referral to the Trafford Safeguarding Team.

Absence

Please note that it is the parent’s responsibility to report your child’s absence on the first day of a child's absence due to illness with an expected date of return.  Parents should keep in regular contact with the school if the absence continues.  Children should return to school as soon as they are well enough to attend.  Parents may be asked to provide medical evidence where there are repeated absences due to reported illnesses.  This will usually be in the form of an appointment card, prescription, GP's letter etc.  All absences will be treated as unauthorised unless a satisfactory explanation for the pupil's absence has been received.  Unauthorised absence may result in the issuing of a penalty notice to the parent or carer.  If an extended absence is taken without permission, or your child fails to return to school on the agreed date, you are at risk of losing your child's place at the school. Please report any absence on the first day, along with the reason for absence to Mrs Scott or Miss Fuller no later than 8.30am.

Medical appointments

Parents should make every possible effort to make medical and dental appointments outside of the school day so as not to disrupt their child's education.  If it is absolutely vital to make an appointment during school time, pupils should attend school for part of the day.  Parents should show the appointment card to school.
