Kings Road Primary School is committed to promoting excellent attendance. Children attain well when their attendance is good or better. Please see our school attendance policy.

If a child is absent, we will follow Trafford’s Graduated Response in-line with our school policy.

At Kings Road, we believe that regular attendance at school is essential if children are to get the best possible start in life. We strongly discourage leave of absence during school time. All those with parental responsibility are accountable for the regular and punctual attendance of their children. If your child is absent for 10 school days, they will miss 5% of their education during the academic year.

The DFE is very clear that schools may not authorise holidays for children during term time. This includes for overseas weddings, to allow for unusual working patterns or to visit family. Holidays will not be permitted during term time. We encourage all parents to make non-urgent medical appointments, including dental appointments, outside of the school day.

Expected absence procedure for parents:

A parent has a legal responsibility to ensure that their child attends school regularly. If a child is unavoidably absent from school parents are expected to contact school

by telephone call on the morning of the first day of absence and on each subsequent day, identifying the reason for absence and the expected date of return.

Absence can be reported at the office – 0161 881 3571, the attendance phone line 0161 860 6157, Dojo Miss Fuller or email attendance@kingsroadschool.co.uk

If no contact is received, then school absence protocols will be instigated.

If a child is absent, the following actions will be initiated by the school. - remove)

Persistent Absence (attendance is 90% or below)

When a pupil’s overall absence is 10% or more of their possible sessions (attendance is 90% or below), attendance is a serious concern. This is a high risk group and the pupil is now identified as persistently absent (PA).

If a pupil has continued poor attendance, you are at risk of a penalty notice or a referral being made to Early Help (Trafford’s safeguarding team).

Persistent absence is a serious problem for pupils. Much of the work children miss when they are off school is never made up, leaving these pupils at a considerable disadvantage for the remainder of their school career. There is also clear evidence of a link between poor attendance at school and low levels of achievement:

The attendance officer will contact you if your child is close to becoming persistently absent or is persistently absent, so that we can work together to improve attendance.

Start of the day

The registers are taken twice a day at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions. Each school day counts as two attendances.

School starts at 08:45 and gates will be locked at 09:00. If the gates are closed, you are late and parents will need to take their children to the school office to sign them in. Please ensure children are punctual to avoid this.

Medical appointments

Parents should make every possible effort to make medical and dental appointments outside of the school day so as not to disrupt their child's education. If it is absolutely vital to make an appointment during school time, pupils should attend school for part of the day around their appointment time. Parents will be asked to show the details of the appointment when collecting or returning their child
