Remote learning is a broad term encompassing any learning that happens outside of the classroom. The aim of education is to deliver a high-quality curriculum so that pupils know more and remember more. Remote learning is one way of doing so.
At Kings Road we use Google Classroom as our digital learning platform for online learning. Each child has their own login details for their Google class account. If you have any difficulty logging into Google Classroom, please contact your class teacher through Class Dojo. We use Zoom for 'Rise and Shine' registration and live lessons. We expect all children and parents to follow our virtual code of conduct.
Class teachers will set meaningful and ambitious work each day via Google Classroom in an appropriate range of subjects. This will include both recorded or live direct teaching time and time for pupils to complete tasks independently.
We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take children broadly the following number of hours each day:
Key stage 1 (infants including EYFS) – 3 hours a day on average across the cohort, with less for younger children
Key Stage 2 (juniors) – 4 hours a day
The first day or two of remote learning might look different from our standard approach as outlined in the policy, while we take necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school but may have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects.
We will use a combination of approaches to teach pupils remotely. For example, this may include;
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written notes from the teacher for individual children. For example, whole class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via a digital platform are also valid and effective methods. Please refer to the policy for our full approach to feeding back on children’s work.
If you don’t have digital or online access at home
We understand that some families may not have suitable online access at home. If you are struggling to access remote learning, we ask that you contact your class teacher in the first instance who will be able to advise and support you. The school office will also be able to give you the government advice about how to access additional data where this is a problem for accessing remote learning. We are all here to help and support you as much as we can.
You may be aware that the Department for Education (DFE) have provided schools across England with devices to support families who are struggling to access digital and online education. Unfortunately, this is not an infinite number of devices to enable us to provide every family at Kings Road with a device. We have allocated the laptops we have been provided with to our most in need families based on the information we have about access at home and individual circumstances. If you find you are struggling through lack of or unsuitable devices at home, please inform your class teacher in the first instance.
If you need to request support for any element of remote learning for your child, including technical support or have any concerns at all about your child's remote learning, please contact your class teacher through Class Dojo as soon as possible and they will be able to help you.
